Bison in the Beginning
Located in Rush County, Bison, Kansas, is named after the many bison that once roamed the surrounding prairie. The town’s inception was in the late 1880s when the Missouri Pacific Railroad plowed through the area. It was originally named “Buffalo,” but after finding the name to be in use by another city, “Bison” was chosen. The town’s first homestead was built in 1886. Two years later, a post office and general store were erected, and Bison became a thriving development in the years that followed.
By the start of the 20th century, Bison had a bank, a newspaper called the Bison Bee, a telephone company, and several retail stores. Several churches including the German Baptist Church and the English Methodist Episcopal opened their doors to parishioners.
In the early 1900s, the first gas well was drilled in Rush County, KS, thus beginning the area’s oil and gas development. The town was incorporated in 1911. Later, in the 1930s, the Works Progress Administration built a new school and hand-dug a municipal water well. That well is still in use today.
Locals and visitors can learn more about the town’s history by visiting the Bison Community Museum, located on Main Street. The museum houses many tools, photographs, and household goods of Bison’s earlier days.
