McCracken, KS, was founded in 1887, and named after J.K. McCracken, a local railroad conductor and one of the first trustees. The town experienced some increase — gaining two grocery stores, a newspaper, a bank, and other amenities. McCracken’s population peaked in the 1930s, with a population of 594. After losing its train depot, however, the town began to dwindle. Today, about 175 people call this small rural town home.
